Book Traveling Thursdays: Lazy Day Reading

Hello, August! When did this happen? I am sad to see July leave, since August is a crazy month for me! However, it is also a fresh start, so I have to be grateful for that. As such, I am going to try and keep up better with my favorite challenges and themes, hence Book Traveling Thursdays.

The Rules:

1) Pick a book! At the beginning of every month a list of themes will be posted. All you have to do is choose a book that fits the theme.
2) In your blog post, the first thing you will want to include is an explanation of why your chosen book fits the theme.
2) Look at covers from multiple editions and multiple countries for the book you chose.
3) Finally, include pictures of the original cover, the cover from your country (if their are multiple covers from your country include all of them!), your favorite cover, and your least favorite cover.
4) Be sure to tag your posts with booktravelingthursdays so we can all see each other’s posts!
 This Week’s Theme:
Everyone needs at least on lazy day! Choose a book you would want to read in a lazy day at home or the beach.
Book I Chose:
Why?:
When I am feeling lazy, I like reading happy, light stories with little consequence that you know will end well. (Let me re-phrase that… that is basically what I always like to read, but when I’m lazy, this feeling especially comes out.) Allen’s books are beautifully written, take place in the Carolinas, and are filled with light touches of magic in an otherwise mundane world. They feature people with regular turmoils that come up with slightly odd solutions and make everything work in the end. There is love and minimal loss, perfect for a lazy day- whether it be in the sun on a beach or in your armchair amidst a rain storm.
Original Cover:
7859343My favorite, also. So beautifully magical, I really think it captures the book’s essence- the real world doesn’t have to suck, but a little magic goes a long way in making life better. The art department had a long-documented struggle with choosing the right cover for this novel, and damn did they do a fine job of it.
My Country’s Covers:
Besides the one8517332.jpg above, there is only one other cover for the USA. That’s okay- it keeps us from getting confused (bloody Americans, eh?) This cover, I feel, is just as beautiful but conveys a different message. This one shows the struggle of the main character prior to the resolution- less of the wonder, more of the upset. I don’t know if that is how it was meant to come off, but to someone who has read it on many a lazy day, that’s how it felt.
Other Country’s Covers:
Some of these are cool, others are downright odd. We have:

Some of these are close to the American, but others take a different spin. The Polish cover looks at a different character in the book than the others- Most are representing Emily, but this cover depicts Julia-which is an interesting spin, but the cover is mundane. Germany is the only cover that indicates the romance, which is good and bad. Good because there is a lot of romance in the novel, bad because it takes away from the core feminine strength that Allen includes.

My Favorite and Least Favorite Covers:

Favorite is still the tried and true original cover. I love the magic and beauty displayed. None of the covers are horrible (in my honest opinion) but I don’t love Poland’s since I find it mundane, and I feel that the British covers are a little too simplistic. They are pretty, but not eye-grabbing.

What do you think? What are your favorite Lazy Days type of books?

  1. OMG!! It’s so good to see someone appreciating Sarah Addison Allen’s books. For some reason people don’t talk about her books at all and I just love them. I agree with you on your choices. My favorite has to be the portuguese one. It’s the one I own and it’s gorgeous. Actually her books here in Portugal have the most amazing covers and that’s the main reason why I even found out about Sarah Addison Allen.

    1. You definitely should! her books are all very lovely, very light and fun. Quick reads, also. Honestly, the British covers are pretty, I just like the pizzazz of the others because I like the stories. But you may still love the British ones! It is hard to choose a bad cover from the selection
